Which Shoes for Lindy Hop, Balboa and Solo Jazz

Ask this question in a class and you will get a dozen answers, most of them about brands. The useful answer is not a brand at all: it is three decisions, and they are the same three decisions for every dance.

The sole, the heel and the fit. Get those right for the way you dance, and almost any classic style will carry you through the night. Here is how each dance leans, and which of our models suit it.

What actually changes between the dances

Not the shoe. The floor contact.

Lindy hop travels, balboa stays close and fast, solo jazz has no partner to balance against, boogie woogie is quick and bouncy. Those differences show up in how much you pivot, how much you land, and how long you are on the ball of your foot. That is why the sole and the heel matter more than the silhouette on top.

Lindy hop

Swingouts travel, Charleston bounces, and you move in and out of a partner's space all night. You need a sole you can pivot on and a base steady enough to land the big movements.

Sole: leather if you know the floor and it is good, half leather half rubber if you want the slide with a brake on it.

Heel: the middle of the range rather than the extremes.

Models: for followers a mary jane or t-strap holds the foot through every pivot, like Edith or Ada Overton. For leaders an oxford gives the firmest hold: Lester Oxford or La la land Oxford.

Balboa

There is a persistent idea that balboa means flat shoes. It does not.

Balboa happens almost entirely through the front of the foot, in a small space, at speed. A moderate heel keeps your weight where the dance already wants it, which is why experienced balboa dancers generally choose a heel rather than a flat.

Heel: 4 cm rather than 2 cm for followers. If you dance both balboa and lindy in the same night, this is the height that handles both.

Models: a closed, secure upper such as Peggy or Hellenistic. For leaders a loafer is a good balboa shoe: Classic Loafer or Basie.

Boogie woogie

Fast, bouncy, and hard on the feet over a long night. Cushioning underfoot matters more here than glide.

Sole: the Super Comfort Eva base. It is a sports style sole, light and cushioned, and it is the one that keeps you dancing when the tempo does not drop.

Models: any of the Super Comfort models, for example Super Comfort Oscar or Herbert.

Solo jazz

No partner to balance against: everything is your own weight and your own control.

Some dancers want a lower heel for the stability. Others want a heel precisely because the weight forward position suits the footwork, and because solo jazz is often performed, so the line of the leg matters. Both work, which is why the choice stays yours.

If you are learning solo jazz alongside lindy, one pair in the middle of the range will do both.

One pair for class and for the social

This is the most common real question, and it has a clear answer.

Classes are long, floors are unpredictable and you are on your feet for hours. Socials are shorter but faster, and the floor is usually better. One pair covers both if you avoid the extremes: a sole that neither sticks nor runs away from you, and a heel you can still stand in at the end of the night.

Take neolite or half leather half rubber, a heel in the middle of the range, and your true width. If comfort is the deciding factor, take the Super Comfort Eva base instead and keep the same heel logic.

Comfort over a long night

Three things decide whether your feet survive until the last song, and none of them is the brand.

The fit. Every pair we make comes in narrow, standard or wide, in every size from 34 to 48, and is cut after you order. A shoe that is a size too big is the fastest way to a painful night, because your foot slides forward with every step.

The cushioning. Every pair is padded with a memory foam insole, whichever sole you choose.

The heel you can actually stand in. Being comfortable at 2 cm beats being careful at 6.5 cm. Height looks good in photographs; the right height keeps you on the floor.

If you want one answer

Mostly lindy hop: a mary jane, t-strap or oxford, middle of the heel range, leather or half and half sole.

Balboa, or balboa and lindy the same night: 4 cm, closed upper for followers, a loafer for leaders.

Boogie woogie, or long nights: Super Comfort Eva.

Solo jazz: whichever height you control best; both are correct.

Still choosing your first pair: neolite or half and half, a modest heel, your true width. The first pair guide walks through it.

Every pair is handmade to order in any size from 34 to 48, in narrow, standard or wide, with the heel, sole and colour you choose, made in 10 to 15 business days and shipped worldwide. If you are unsure which combination suits where you dance, write to us before you order; helping you choose is part of the craft. Browse all the models here.
