The styles

Oxford. The closed lacing system gives the cleanest, most formal line, and it holds the foot firmly, which is exactly what you want when you spend the evening moving. This is the classic swing era shoe, and the one you see in almost every photograph from the period.

Derby. Open lacing, slightly more relaxed in look, and a little more adjustable over the instep. If you like a little extra room over the instep, a derby gives it beautifully.

Loafer. No laces at all. Easy on, easy off, and a more casual line that still reads as vintage. A good choice for social dancing and for anyone who values comfort over formality.

Monk strap. A buckle instead of laces. Less common on the dance floor, which is precisely why some dancers choose it.

The spectator. Not a construction but a look: the two-tone shoe, black and white or brown and cream, that defined the swing era. A spectator oxford is the most recognisable dance shoe there is. If you want one pair that says exactly what it is for, this is it.

What matters in a men's dance shoe

Three things: the sole, the fit, and whether the shoe holds your foot.

The sole decides how the shoe behaves on the floor. Leather slides the most and is what most dancers ask for. Neolite sits in the middle and handles unpredictable floors. Rubber grips. And there is a half-and-half option, leather at the back and rubber at the front, that gives you the slide with a brake built in.

The fit decides whether you are still comfortable at midnight. Every pair we make comes in narrow, standard or wide, in every size from 34 to 48, and is cut after you order. If you have wide feet, here you choose width and length separately, and the fit is simply right.

And the hold: a dance shoe fits closer than a street shoe, so the pivot happens between the sole and the floor, exactly where you want it. This is why we ask for your foot length in centimetres after you order, and check it before we cut.

These are men's styles, and they are made in every size from 34 to 48, which means plenty of women order them too. A flat oxford is a popular choice for followers who prefer a lead's shoe, and for anyone who simply likes the look. The style describes the shoe, not the person who wears it.
